Junior Pig Club

The Junior Pig Club was started over 10 years ago to encourage young people interested in pigs. The mission statement of the JPC is:

'The Junior Pig Club is dedicated to growing and developing a strong, family community where teamwork, education, and fun intersect. Our mission is to nurture the next generation of pedigree pig farmers by fostering a supportive environment that values collaboration, learning, and strong friendship bonds. Through friendly competitions, educational visits and mentoring by experienced members, we aim to instil a passion for agriculture, build lasting relationships, and develop the skills needed to excel in the world of pig farming. Committed to creating a fun and inclusive atmosphere, we aspire to be a club where every member becomes part of our extended family, sharing the joy of Junior Pig Club.'

 As well as encouraging individual membership the club also encourages school membership giving children that don’t necessarily have an agricultural background to be involved in pigs and learn about where there food comes from. The schools are also an important part of our conservation plans, spreading rare bloodline around the country.

During the summer months the JPC can be found at a number of different shows across the country. This year they have or will be attending:

• Lincoln Country Days - 14th April  
• Newark and Notts County Show - 11th May
• Stafford County Show - 29th May - 30th May
• Great Yorkshire Show - 9th– 12th July
• Malvern Autumn Show 27th-29th September
• Scottish Smallholders Show - 19th October
• Stafford Winter Fair - 16th - 17th November

Piggy camp in August once a year taking place at a members farm this year.

As well as attending shows either as a display team or as part of the show classes, they also run a number of workshops throughout the year looking at different aspects from ‘how to AI a pig’ through to ‘how to make sausages’.

 Hi, my name is Phoebe Naylor and I am 11 years old.  I live in Tunbridge wells Kent on a dairy farm. I go to Heathfield Community Collage secondary school where I am in year 7. 

I enjoy playing cricket in the summer, I go to Chidingly cricket club and play in the junior team. At my grandparents small holding in Framfield I have my own pigs. My pigs are British Kunekune’s, and they currently have babies.  As well as my pigs on farm there also Herefordshire cattle, ducks, chickens, Dartmoor ponies and other breeds of pigs, Large Black, Saddleback and we will soon be welcoming in Middle Whites.

 Hi my name is Alfie and I am 12 years old. I have British Lops and Gloustershire old spots as well as my own small flock of sheep. My hobbies include showing pigs, shooting, all things farming and training my gun dog.    I like to help with my family’s meat business and promote British agriculture.  I look forward to meeting new friends.

 My name is Seb Carr and I am 13 years old.  I live in Dorset and I own the Silverbirch Herd of British Saddleback pigs.  When I was 8 years old my parents bought me 4 British Saddleback registered gilts as a surprise for Christmas, to rear for meat.  I ended up keeping two of them and then travelling to Wales to buy my first boar.  I now have 6 breeding sows and 2 boars, all different bloodlines.
